We are thrilled to announce that the OMEGA Observatory was officially released during the Latin American Association for the Study of the Liver (ALEH) congress 2024. In particular, this project was presented during the session ‘Challenges ahead in LATAM’ on September 11th, 2024. OMEGA, a groundbreaking non-profit observatory, was set to transform the landscape of gastrointestinal health in the Americas. Our organization seeks to reduce the prevalence and impact of gastrointestinal and liver diseases through education initiatives, training, epidemiological data analysis, and the promotion of public health policies.
Founded by a collaboration of medical professionals, researchers, and public health advocates, OMEGA’s primary objective is to bridge gaps in knowledge and access to resources for healthcare providers. By equipping medical professionals with up-to-date training and educational tools, and empowering patients with crucial information, we aim to alleviate the burden of gastrointestinal diseases across the region.
Prof. Luis Antonio Díaz presented the final results of the Alcohol Preparedness Index and launched the OMEGA Observatory in Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases during the American Association for the Study of the Liver (ALEH) Congress on September 11th, 2024.
A Mission Rooted in Science and Promotion
OMEGA’s primary mission is to decrease the physical and social consequences of prevalent gastrointestinal and liver diseases. This will be achieved through the periodic assessment of epidemiological data, the promotion of research, and the advocacy of public health policies in the Americas. By leveraging scientific insights, OMEGA intends to offer real-time data that can inform health interventions and policy changes, ensuring that decisions made at the local, regional, and national levels are grounded in the most accurate and current information available.
We are focused on the leading causes of quality-adjusted life years and death due to digestive and liver diseases, including gastric cancer, Helicobacter pylori infection, functional diseases, and liver diseases in the Americas. These conditions place a heavy financial strain on healthcare systems. OMEGA believes that timely and regular data assessment, combined with effective public health advocacy, can help prevent these diseases and improve outcomes for those already affected.
A Vision for a Healthier Future
OMEGA’s vision extends beyond the immediate provision of resources and training. The organization is driven by a long-term goal to improve the existence and implementation of public health policies related to gastrointestinal diseases. This includes advocating for better screening programs, improving diagnostic capabilities, and expanding access to therapeutic options.
By partnering with healthcare institutions, and global health organizations, OMEGA strives to influence the creation of more comprehensive screening programs, ensure quality access to care, and advance therapeutic approaches tailored to the unique epidemiological realities of the Americas.
OMEGA’s Path Forward
As OMEGA embarks on its mission, the organization calls on healthcare providers, policymakers, and patients to join forces in the fight against gastrointestinal diseases. By working together, the goal of reducing the burden of these conditions is within reach. With its clear mission, dedicated team, and data-driven approach, OMEGA is poised to become a transformative force for public health in the Americas and other regions globally.
The launch of OMEGA represents a significant step forward in the ongoing battle against gastrointestinal diseases. With its emphasis on education, research, and advocacy, the organization has the potential to improve health outcomes for millions and create lasting change across the region.
